At the end of 2003, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS. In 2005, 37,331 cases of HIV/AIDS in adults, adolescents, and children were diagnosed in the50 states with long-term, confidential name-based HIV reporting. CDC has estimated that approximately 56,300 persons in the United States become infected with HIV each year.

HIV DISEASE IN TENNESSEE

In Tennessee, all 95 counties have reported at least one individual with HIV disease.

There are more than 19,372 reported HIV/AIDS cases in Tennessee. 

HIV infection continues to increase in Tennessee among women, youth, African American, and people at risk due to heterosexual sexual activity or needle sharing related to injectable drug use.

HIV/AIDS Among Our Neighbors

As of  December 31, 2005, our service area of Bradley, McMinn, Meigs and Polk counties had 239 reported cases of HIV/AIDS.

PREVENTION EDUCATION LINKS

Advocates for Youth   Site that is designed to and for youth regarding sex education options. It is also a good resource for educators.

SIECUS  The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS) is a national, nonprofit organization which develops, collects, and disseminates information, promotes comprehensive education about sexuality, and advocates the right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices.

Tennessee Department of Health AIDS Support Service  1-615-741-8530 Provides information about client referrals, medical care, support groups and related issues.

Tennessee HIV/AIDS Information Hotline 1-800-525-AIDS

The Home Place in Chattanooga Provides a home in a supporting, compassionate environment for people with HIV and AIDS, is on the net.

Chattanooga CARES   A not-for-profit organization providing valuable HIV/AIDS support and education throughout 11 counties in Southeast Tennessee, including the Nancy's House service area.

Nashville CARES   The largest community-based AIDS service organization in the state.

Columbia CARES  Serves 12 South Central counties of Middle Tennessee.

  Founded by volunteers in 1981, the oldest and largest not-for-profit AIDS organization in the U.S. GMHC offers hands-on support services to more than 9,500 men, women and children with AIDS and their families in New York City annually, as well as education and advocacy for hundreds of thousands nationwide.
